Collin College Golf closed out its inaugural season with district tournaments in late April. The women's team finished sixth, and the men's team finished 13th.
Johnna Johanson, who ranks 70th in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) women's golf, led the team with a two-day performance of 82 and 86. She was followed closely by Chadaporn "Am" Thaithiang, who finished with 88 and 86. Noel Bondesson, who ranks 78th in the nation, notched scores of 74, 77, and 76.
We had a chance to speak with Coach Cooper Schoolcraft about the team's performance in the tournament and throughout the year. The Q&A follows.
What did you think about the golf teams' performances at district?
"I'm proud of our athletes for getting out there and pushing through. We fought through some difficult weather and course conditions during the district tournaments. Our whole crew was able to remain focused and give it their all despite the tough conditions. They showed great grit and determination, and I couldn't be more proud of their efforts."
How do you feel about the teams' performance overall this season?
"Both of our teams showed steady progress and continual improvement throughout the course of the season. They worked hard each and every week and were able to show how much they love competing. There's a lot of pressure being part of an inaugural team. Every time you set foot on the course you have the opportunity to make history. Both our teams handled that challenge with dignity and gave it their all. As their coach, I couldn't ask for more."
Do you have many athletes coming back next year?
"Johnna Johanson and Gabi Russo will both be returning to our women's team. On the men's side, Zach Johanson and John Holland will both be returning. We've got a great group of new athletes coming in for this next season, and we're excited to get to work and continue to build off the foundation laid by this year's team."
Any closing thoughts?
"We've had a blast this season laying the framework for this program, and we're very excited for the future of Cougar Golf!"
