Collin College Men's and Women's Tennis swung into action in late January, and Coach Jamie Nanez answered a few questions about the season thus far.
How do you feel coming into the spring season?
So far, so good. We've had a couple of early injuries, but nothing too serious. The men's team started off slow but had a good win against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Our women's team is young. They are still learning. I see their development, though. Our last match against Angelo State was very competitive, even though the score maybe doesn't reflect that.
I think it really boils down to our attitude and competitiveness for both teams. We have to develop our game attitudes and expect to win matches.
Are you seeing individual success from your players?
On one hand, you want to see the wins. On the other hand, you want to see a good level of competition and ultimately development. We have at least two or three players competing hard in every match.
We have a good group of players, and I think they realize that our skills are on par with the teams we're facing. We have put some opposing players in a corner. For us to go out and put pressure on some of these teams is huge. The scores do not show the whole story.
Each player on the women's team has been in competitive matches at one point or another – from our No. 1 to our No. 6. Alyssa Glasgow has really developed her game and has probably been the most competitive player out of the break. She has a competitive spirit that lifts up the whole team. I believe we will be a different team at the end of this semester.
The men's team just needs a bit more time to get into the swing of things. I know they have "it." I think we are hitting our stride.
What are your strengths as a team?
Our men's team has experience. That is for sure. We want to use that this year.
Our women's team definitely has more skill this year. I think they can surprise people.
Where can you improve?
Attitude is everything for us. We have to develop our "mindset." I think we are a bit too nice. We have to channel our inner COUGAR and attack a bit more. We have to come into our matches "hungry for the hunt." A hungry cougar hunts best! When we have our chances to inflict damage, we need to get focused and pounce.
