Collin College Women's Basketball got off to a hot start with four wins in their first two weeks of 2025. The Cougars will face tough competition in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC).
Collin sits at No. 2 in the NTJCAC rankings behind only McLennan Community College to start conference play. McLennan, ranked No. 10 in the nation, and Grayson College remain undefeated through the first two weeks of the new year. Collin can expect tough games from both.
The Cougars defeated Temple College, whose 11-5 record matches Collin, 89-73 on the road Jan. 11. The second of Collin's conference games so far, the Cougars came out strong in the first quarter, putting up 25 points to Temple's 12. Collin used that cushion and a 37-point performance by Alisha Nunley to build all game long.
Nunley, who was the NTJCAC Player of the Week for Dec. 9 after another monster performance against No. 21 Murray State, sank 63% from the field and led with four steals. The team as a whole shot 56.9% from the field and 41.7% from the three-point line. Olivia Grgicevich Lassey put up 22 points and Kenzie Willis-Gusters rounded out the top three scorers with 12 points.
Collin started conference play with a 64-54 win over Weatherford College. Lassey led the team with 19 points, followed by Nunley with 17 and Taliah Martin with 9. Martin, who would have two blocks against Temple, notched one in this game as well.
The Cougars started the month with a pair of pre-conference tune-up games against Connors State and Frank Phillips College.
Collin defeated Connors 78-54 with freshman forward Sara Basaran putting up 18 points, followed by Nunley with 15 and 13-point performances by Willis-Gusters and Ella Macleod, a freshman guard out of Eynesbury, Australia. Basaran is from Sweden, making the pair two of five international players on the team, including Lassey, Mufaro Mapengo, and Maya Fowler, all of whom are from New Zealand.
Collin had a little tighter game against Frank Phillips College but came away with a 55-46 win. The teams were neck-and-neck in the first half before stretching the lead by 4 points each in the final two frames. Macleod led the team in scoring with 16 points, followed by Lassey with 10 and Nunley with 9. Lassey and Nunley each had three steals in the game. Martin recorded the Cougars' lone block.
