Men’s Basketball battles before break

Collin College Men's Basketball picked up one win and four losses over the last five games but should wrap up its winter games with a couple of wins this coming week.

Collin split two tight games on a swing through Oklahoma, Nov. 23-24, going to overtime in an 80-78 loss to Eastern Oklahoma State College and claiming a 78-76 victory over Seminole State College.

Collin started out strong against Eastern Oklahoma, leading by 11 at the break before the Mountaineers rallied to push the game into overtime. David Emelife led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points, shooting 66% from the floor. He was followed by Vinny Sigona with 16 points and Garrett Falls with 12 points. The Cougars had a decent shooting percentage at 40% from the field and 34.3% from behind the three-point line.

The Cougars' opponents came back in their next game as well, but Collin was able to hold them off in their two-point win over Seminole State. Geancarlo Peguero a freshman forward out of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, led all scorers with 20 points, sinking three of four treys and eight of 10 shots from the field. The Cougars had good shooting overall with a 48.2% performance from the field and 44% from three-point range. Peguero was followed by Sigona with 17 points and Emelife with 12.

Collin faced off against a pair of heavy hitting teams at the Collin College Classic invitational tournament held over Thanksgiving break.

The Cougars lost 81-70 to South Plains College on Nov. 29. The Texans jumped out to a 9-point halftime lead, and while Collin went step-for-step in the second half, the Cougars closed out the game down 11. Sigona led with 15 points, followed by Falls, Emelife, and Peguero, each of whom had 12 points.

The Cougars lost 86-66 to No. 2-ranked New Mexico Junior College on the second day of the Classic. Collin again shot a respectable 40% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc but could not stop the Thunderbirds which sank half of their shots from the field. Falls also sank half of his shots and led scoring for Collin with 22 points and three steals. Brady Kennison followed with 17 points, and Vladislav Karasev, a returner from last year, followed with 11 points.

Collin also lost 70-56 to Murray State College on Dec. 4. Emelife led Collin in points scored with 10. He was followed by Kennison with 9, while Falls and Sigona each had 8 points.

The Cougars will close out 2024 with a pair of home games. The team will play Strength 'N Motion Academy starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The final home game of the year will be against Nelson University, starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Collin will play a tune-up game on Saturday, Jan. 4 against Dallas College Cedar Valley before conference play begins the following week. Tip-off for the game against the Suns is at 1 p.m.
