Collin College Women's Basketball started the season with wins over a couple of tough teams in road tournaments. The team will continue to travel throughout most of the month, returning to Collin on Nov. 29.
Collin's first game was against Howard College out of Big Spring. While Howard came out strong, Collin outperformed them in the final three quarters. Collin won 70-53, with returning sophomore Alisha Nunley scoring 23 points. She was followed by Olivia Grgicevich Lassey with 13 points and Kenzie Willis-Gusters with 10. The team shot 37% from the field. Grgicevich Lassey led the team in steals with six, and Taliah Martin notched two blocks.
Nunley and Willis Gusters join Jayden Smallwood as the returners from last year's North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) Region V tournament-winning team. The Collin women's team comes into the season ranked No. 12 nationally and No. 2 in the NTJCAC behind McLennan. McLennan was voted No. 23 in the Oct. 21 coaches poll that put Collin in the No. 12 spot.
Willis-Gusters and Grgicevich Lassey led scoring in Collin's 84-77 win over North Idaho College. The team shot 35.8% from the field, with Willis-Gusters and Grgicevich Lassey each putting up 21 points. They were followed by Nunley, who had 18 points.
North Idaho went up by 6 points early in the game, but Collin battled back after half-time adjustments and outscored the Cardinals by 11 points in the closing frame. Collin had 18 steals and 19 offensive rebounds in the game, showing they were working hard on both ends of the floor.
The Collin women's team will play its first home game of the season at the Collin College Classic, an invitational tournament Nov. 29-30. Collin will play Tyler Junior College starting at 1 p.m., Nov. 29 and follow up with a game against Kilgore College at 1 p.m. on Nov. 30.
