Collin College Golf participated in its first tournament of its inaugural season at the Jacksonville Invitational, Sept. 23-24. We caught up with Coach Cooper Schoolcraft to ask a few questions about the team's performance.

What were the results of the tournament?
Noel Bondesson shows his trophy from Collin College's first-ever golf team tournament. Our men's team finished in ninth place, led by sophomore Noel Bondesson (pictured at right), who fired a three-round total of 217 (74-69-74). Bondesson placed sixth individually. Our women's team finished in fifth place, led by freshman Johnna Johanson, who finished 12th individually after carding a two-round total of 173 (85-88).

What did you think about the team's performance?
We have some things we need to improve on, but I was very encouraged by many of the things I saw throughout the week. This team has a ton of potential.

Were the results what you expected them to be, and why or why not?
Yes, we played about how I expected. The goal of these early tournaments is to knock off the rust and get back into the rhythm of playing tournament golf. This week gave us a great baseline to work from as we continue to improve.

Did anyone stand out on either the men's or the women's team? If so, how?
All five members of our men's team were able to put together some solid rounds this week. All of them were able to put themselves in position to score, and they were able to capitalize on many of those opportunities. As we continue to build consistency, it's going to be fun to see just how low these guys can go.

I'd say the same for the women's team. Every one of them had several looks at birdie this week, many of which they were able to take advantage of. It really is fun to see these athletes put themselves in positions where they have the opportunity to be successful.

What lessons will you and the players take away from this tournament?
This tournament was a great reminder for us that golf is a game where you have to take one shot at a time. When we start thinking about past shots or what our potential score will be, we usually lose focus and forget about the most important thing – the next shot. That next shot is the only thing that matters.

What are you looking forward to in your next tournament on Oct. 7-8?
We're excited to have the opportunity to go out and compete again in Ardmore, Oklahoma, at the Murray State Invitational this next week. Each tournament this fall will be a great opportunity for us to see where we're at and what areas we need to improve on as we prepare for the spring season.
